About
1/4 of the world is grasslands.
Most of this as been converted to farmlands because
the soil is so rich. The large flat areas are covered
with tall grasses and wild flowers. Today, few areas
remain in their natural state.
Much
of the grasslands are maintained by fires and
the grazing of animals. This removes the old hay
and allows the new plants to grow.
Some
plants have developed special adaptations to protect
them from the grazers, such as poison ivy which
causes rashes when it's touched.
Grasslands
are famous for their beautiful colors in the springtime,
but in autumn they become just as beautiful in
wonderful shades of yellow and brown.
