TROPICAL
RAIN FOREST
Life inside the tropical rainforest is filled with
danger. Cougars and pumas stand ready to attack;
snakes sliver unseen between feet to administer
a lethal bite; while exotic birds chirp overhead.
An animal must be both smart and strong to survive
in this environment. The intense competition from
other species makes rainforest species the most
interesting.

MID-LATITUDE
FOREST
Leaves fall off trees here in the fall, leaving
animals with less cover to hide themselves from
predators. Animals living within this biome must
adjust to cold winters and hot summers by hibernating,
migrating, or keeping active all winter.

|
CONIFEROUS
FOREST
Life in the coniferous winter is cold and dreary.
Snow, cold, and a scarcity of food make life, especially
in the winter, very difficult. Some animals migrate
south, others go into hibernation, while others
simply cope with the environment.

TEMPERATE
FORESTS
Precipitation
in the temperate deciduous forest falls throughout
the year. However, during the winter months it is
usually frozen and less is available for animals
to drink.

|
CHAPARRAL
Animals in the chaparral must survive in a harsh
environment. Intense heat, searing sun, and lack
of water are just a few of the challenges facing
the animals.

Can
you believe this squirrel is specially adapted
to "fly" from tree to tree?
The
Southern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys Volans)
has large flaps or loose skin that hangs from
its arms to create a fake parachute. These "wings"
give the squirrel the ability to jump incredible
distances and it does look as if it were flying!
