THE AMUNDSEN-SCOTT EXPEDITIONS
Robert Falcon Scott, a British
naval officer, wanted to conquer the South Pole, he trained for
many years and decided to be the first man to go there. He found
some other explorers who dared to take the challenge and they set
off on their very long and dangerous hike. Others had tried and
failed due to lack of food or terrible weather conditions.
It took them a month to get
there hauling their supplies by dog sleds. When he finally got
there, he learned that Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer
had conquered the pole almost 5 weeks earlier! Scott and his party
turned back home and died on the way, two from injury and the
others from starvation after a blizzard froze all there supplies.
Amundsen's team had much more experience in these conditions and
managed to get back safely in a month.
Today, the Amundsen-Scott
Research Base serves as a remainder of their brave effort
which has inspired many more to follow their dreams. |
