DESERTS are second
only to tropical rainforests in the variety of plant
and animal species that live there.
Desert
plants have two main adaptations:
Ability
to collect and store water
Features
that reduce water loss
Because
desert plants have almost no leaves, photosynthesis
occurs in their stems. The stems are also used to
store enough water to survive until the next rain
season. This is why the desert plants have such
green stems.
The
roots of these plants are spread across large
areas and stay close to the surface, making
it easier for them to collect water every time
it rains. The strange shapes and textures these
plants have are special adaptations to maintain
precious water inside and keep the plants alive.
In fact, desert plants often look different than
plants in any other biome.

Can
you believe that even with such little rainfall
desert plants are able to remain so green?
